 01  How Long has Skills, Inc. been around?

​

Skills, Inc. has served persons with disabilities and the businesses of Northeastern North Carolina since 1982.  

 

 

 

 02  What areas do you serve?

​

Skills, Inc. serves the citizens of Camden, Chowan, Currituck, Dare, Gates, Pasquotank, and Perquimans counties. 

 

 

 

 03  How much will it cost me to attend?

​

Most of our clients don't pay anything out of pocket.  Our clients are usually sponsored in this program by the North Carolina Department of Vocational Rehabitation (NCDVRS).  To see if you qualify for NCDVRS services, contact them at 252-331-4768 or at their website at https://www.ncdhhs.gov/divisions/dvrs

 

 

 

 04  Do you provide transportation?

Yes!  For qualifying applicants, transportation is provided free of charge.

 

 05 Who is eligible for Skills, Inc. programs?

​

Eligibility criteria requires that persons be at least 16 years old (no maximum age), have a documented mental or physical disability which currently precludes appropriate employment; be free of behavioral or medical conditions which cause danger to self or others in the center; and to be able to move, communicate, and care for personal hygiene and dining needs independently while at Skills, Inc. There must be a reasonable expectation that the person will benefit from our services.

 

 

 

 06 How long does the program last?

 

How long you stay in the program depends largely on how much effort you put in to it.  Each person entering our programs gets a plan designed specifically for them.  While our Work adjustment programs are limited to 90 days,  your specific program may be longer or shorter,  We will promise that as long as you don't give up on yourself, we won't give up on you! There is a job out there for everybody!

 07 What kind of job can I get?

​

Skills, Inc. has placed people to work in jobs ranging from from entry level to professional positions.  We look at your unique skills, abilities, and desires, and try to help you find a job that's right for you.  

 

 

 

 08 I have a criminal background.  Can you still help me?

​

Absolutely!  We aren't saying that it will be easy, depending on your specific circumstances, but we have had success placing people with criminal records in the past. As long as you are willing to give it your best effort, we are willing to help!

 

 

 

 09 How do you get paid wile in training?

​

Yes.  If you perform work for us, then you deserve to get paid for it.  Our training programs pay at least minimum wage.

 

 

 

 10 Will going to work affect my benefits?

​

Honestly, it might.  Skills staff works with our partner agencies to ensure that before you go to work, you understand exactly how working will affect your benefits.  This enables you to make an informed, educated decision about what type of work situation is best for you.
